Virginia’s Dream

What’s your dream? Thanks to Second Wind Dreams, we have the opportunity to ask our residents that question . . . and then make some of those dreams come true! On May 18th, Woodland Ridge resident Virginia Holliday got a dream-come-true chance to return to school to lead a kindergarten class again. She had taught kindergarten for 36 years in Columbia, Tennessee.

Miss Virginia had celebrated her 92nd birthday earlier in the month, and her family was excited to help us fulfill this dream for her. The morning started with a trip on the Woodland Ridge bus to take Miss Virginia to Cumberland Christian Academy where she met Deanna Allen and her kindergarten students. The children were as excited as Miss Virginia was! They shared a snack with her and sang songs for her. She was patting her leg in time with the music as the children sang.

Miss Virginia’s niece Carrie McCall accompanied her on the trip and told us how, after leaving, Miss Virginia commented, “weren’t those children beautiful”! Carrie says, “the school was very warm and welcoming” and told us what a special experience it was for her Aunt Virginia.

Second Wind Dreams, a nonprofit organization, coordinates dream fulfillment for seniors and provides education about dementia. Founded by award-winning geriatrician, P.K. Beville, Second Wind Dreams also developed and provides facilitator training for the Virtual Dementia Tour®, a tool that allows family members and caregivers to experience what it might be like to have dementia.

Each year, Second Wind Dreams grants a “sleeping dream” to someone living with a dementia diagnosis. Miss Virginia was the 2015 recipient of the Bert Brodsky Second Wind Dreams Sleeping Dream.

We’re always interested in helping our residents fulfill their dreams, so please let us know if you have an idea for a Second Wind Dream. Contact Kathryn Trice at kathrynt@caravita.com.
